Have you ever wondered what you should eat to make sure your baby is getting everything they need? The best foods to eat while breastfeeding depend on a lot of factors including what you need, what baby needs and the age of your baby. When Ellie was about 2 months old I found out she had a dairy allergy and I needed to cut out all dairy from my diet. Of course, I already knew that what I ate, she ate. For some reason this drove that point home and forced me to really think about what I was eating and, by extension, what she was eating.
I think of the food I eat while breastfeeding in a few different ways. There are foods that are said to increase supply, foods that keep me and my nursling healthy, and foods that probably don’t help with either of those things but are pretty yummy.
I try to combine the first two categories and limit the third but sometimes you just have to have a piece cake. Certain foods help increase supply. These food are called galactagogues, which really just refers to anything that increases your supply. Oatmeal and staying super hydrated are things that I have always used and that work best for me.
The other thing that has always helped my supply, although not officially a galactagogue, is tons and tons of veggies. I make soup a lot when it is cold out because I can add all the good things in there. This one is butternut squash, turnip and tons of spices. This time I topped it with some kale chips for some extra leafy green goodness.
I also load up on the roasted veggies. we recently bought an air fryer and it is the best. We are getting our veggies from Misfits Market these days and I love everything about it. But more on that in another post.
Breastmilk is called liquid gold for a reason. It gives our babies all the good stuff they need. But making sure mama is getting what SHE needs is something we tend forget. Your body will take whatever your baby needs and divert the nutrients to them so it is super important to load up on everything you need.
And don’t forget that third category. Because nursing makes you HUNGRY or if you are like me HANGRY. And the cure for hangry is sometimes dark chocolate or cheesecake.
