To my sweet babies,
Right now I think you are too young to even understand how mean people can be but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start learning how to be kind. Kind is defined as being friendly, generous and considerate. It is different from being nice. I watch you with your friends at school, with each other and with everyone you meet and I see the kindness radiating from you. But I also know that in a few short years you will encounter bullies and kids that don’t see the importance of always being kind to others.
Always Be Kind
Kindness is a way of life. It can make you happy. I am not a scientist but I do know that when I am kind I am happier and I hope you find the same thing. Kindness takes getting to know people, forging connections with people, and doing things for others just to make them happy because their happiness will make you happy.
I remember as a child asking for rolls of quarters so I could give them to the homeless people we passed on the streets while walking around New York City. I didn’t know why I wanted to do this, I was too young to have any need to analyze it, but I remember how happy it made me to help others. That is a feeling I tried to hold on to forever. Occasionally I lost it and slipped into feelings of selfishness but when I am feeling down I know if I do something for someone else I will feel better. I hope you find the same works for you.
I found this project about the 12 Kinds of Kindness and it really resonated with me. It is something I hope you will practice throughout your life. The authors of the project identified a number of ways to be kind. This includes kindness to others and to yourself. Get to know others, imagine their lives and their struggles, smile at others and at yourself. Kindness is something that takes practice. But after time it becomes habit and when it becomes habit it is the greatest tool you will have to always be better and do better.
Watching you grow up is the greatest gift I have ever been given. And the greatest gift I can give you is to love you unconditionally and teach you to always be kind.
